Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, ICSU recently formed a new umbrella activity known as the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). Basically this brings together four big ICSU and ICSU-partnered science programmes:

IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Program)
IHDP (International Human Dimensions Program on Global Environmental Change)
WCRP (World Climate Research Program) and
DIVERSITAS (international program of biodiversity science).

ESSP was formed as a consequence of ICSU's first Global Change Open Science Conference, which was held in Amsterdam in 2001.

The second such conference, now called the ESSP Open Science Conference, will be held in Beijing from 9-12 November 2006.

I must confess it does bother me that ICSU invents these big animals and then seems to exclude from them its Interdisciplinary Bodies (like SCAR and SCOR). So I am convinced that SCAR should have a presence there, to show ICSU and its big programs that we mean business and that we are doing globally relevant research and should not be ignored. This would be a good place to put in the shop window some key results from ongoing programmes like ACE, AGCS, and EBA, which have global as well as regional dimensions.

Abstracts must be submitted between Feb and May 2006.

Do you think we should be involved?
If so, what speakers and topics can you suggest that would show off SCAR in a good light?
And are you prepared to put a budget to this activity? (e.g. one speaker from each SRP - maybe $1500-$2000 each).

Please feel free to circulate this through your SSGs and SRPs.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Regards
Colin

Dear Martin Siegert,

As you most probably know the SCAR Executive Committee held its meeting in July and there were discussed and agreed upon several items relevant to ACE. The Implementation Plan was the major issue and the Executive accepted the Plan with minor changes that we hope you could implement and send the revised version (as Word document, marked Rev.2 ) to the SCAR Secretariat as soon as possible.

I am sending you an extract from the Executive meeting report that is relevant to ACE with several action items listed (attachment).

I do also send you a full set of actions approved by the Executive Committee which are relevant to ACE and its Steering Committee, all SRPs and SSGs (attachment).

I would appreciate if you read through these documents and put into effect required changes regarding the ACE Implementation Plan and ensure that the list of ACE Steering Committee members' names is updated, please.

In order to get a JCADM nominee for your panel you will need to negotiate with Taco de Bruin the Chief Officer for JCADM (bruin@nioz.nl). As in the case of seeking broader geographical representation over time, we realize that discussions with JCADM could take a while so the most important thing at this time is to insert a piece of text indicating that you propose to link with JCADM for data and information management. Later you can add further details as they arise (rev.2, rev 3, etc). Once we have this first revision we will publish it on the SCAR web site.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further enquiries.

I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

with regards,
Marzena
