Email from Julie Brigham Grette to MJS, 29 August 2005

Martin,

Great to hear from you. PAGES of course, is all about promoting community efforts for understanding paleclimate. For this reason, I am sure we can explore ways to develop stronger linkages between PAGES activities and the community building that ACE (probably also ANDRILL) are seeking.

Starting over a decade ago, PAGES developed a number of focus areas, one of which was the polar regions with ITASE (for example) being one of the early outgrowths of some PAGES workshops. In order for PAGES to evolve into the future, we recently had a series of meetings with parts of the community to explore ways of revising the focus areas more along the themes of paleo climate dynamics but with the idea to continue to promote and pursue ways of integration and modeling. We hope to have things more in place by the time of our executive committee meeting at AGU and this might be a great place to discuss things in more detail. If the timing is right, I could drop in on your ACE SSC meeting for a few minutes or you could come to ours --- something like that.

There was a time long ago that different projects "affiliated" with PAGEs but we don't really do that anymore since anyone doing paleo, with a focus on high resolution records and modeling is the very community PAGES hopes to serve. On the other hand, it would be great to develop some ideas so that we have something concrete to work with. I don't see any need for a written proposal (good news for you) but we could develop some ideas for workshops and articles in the newsletter etc.

In the meantime, however, I am ccing this email to the International Program office in Bern and ask that Thorsten Kiefer, our new executive director and Christoph Kull, the science officer be in touch with your request and interest.

I was out tonight with the family to see "The March of the Penquins" in the local theater. What amazing birds -- but I am still trying to figure out what it would be like to walk 50 km over ice essentially with my knees tied together! (you have to chuckle!) So with Antarctic images still on my mind, it seemed appropriate to return your email.

take care....Julie BG
