14.20     *********************** Meeting started ***********************

14.20     Welcome and introductions.

14.25     Inspection of agenda and additional items.

14.27     IPY – ACE has been provisionally accepted as an IPY activity (see letter attached) and progress will be reviewed in March. RD has not (!) been invited to co-Chair BIPOMAC.

ACE now has full endorsement by IPY. ACE has remained intact as is own group, but will work with other groups, such as BIPOMAC (led by Rainer Gersonde). 90% of BIPOMAC are interested in plio-pleistocene, and this part is relevant to ACE. One idea is to have a joint ACE BIPOMAC meeting. We should be able to lever funds with such a large group.

How do we promote ACE in IPY? General feeling is that IPY has no money, but is organising collaboration. Each nation must fund projects themselves. Hopefully ACE endorsement by SCAR may help with ACE-type proposals to IPY initiatives and/or standard proposals.

ACTION 1: MJS to circulate ACE achievements to group and put on website.

ACTION 2: Rob DeConto to put IPY logo on website

ACTION 3: ACE to send Chuck Kennicutt news, when Georeach news items are called for

14.50     ACE website – Deconto

PDRA paid to look after website. Problem is getting people to send information to the website. We could have a power-point exchange, pdf library, photo library.

ACE products are publications and workshop reports, which can be linked to website.

As ACE is simply an umbrella programme, the website should reflect this and have areas for each of the programmes relevant to ACE.

ACTION 4: Sub-committee chairs to get members to submit material to the website.

Could also have information sheets, for education, about Antarctic Climate Evolution.

Also a section of the website for data; could use this for archiving of model metadata, and links to world data centres.

ACE website could also link to other model sites (GLIMMER, GRANTISM, HADCM3 etc), and list contact names, and model outout.

ACTION 5: Rob DeConto and Steve Gaurin to arrange ACE media button on website, with headlines, images, news items, list of press releases.

15.20     ACE book – Florindo

Elsevier agreed to publish ACE book in Spring 2007. 11 chapters, each with lead authors. Each has accepted to write the chapter. Editors (Florindo and Siegert) should receive chapters by 1st December 2006, for final assembly to Elsevier in March 2007.

Could put an early deadline, to ensure some people meet the 1st December deadline.

Could organise a meeting in the summer, for ACE book chapter leaders.

15.27     ACE support for Haywood’s and Florindo’s EGU special sessions. Request for £1500 each, given. (agreed by RD and MJS).

This item was just for information.

Could use this type of money to encourage wider participation in ACE and SCAR. Also, ACE could add cash to SCAR fellows, if relevant to ACE.

Members need to submit proposals to Dunbar and Siegert, and ACE will try and help.

15.30     Wilson’s sub committees on seismics, and on permafrost (proposals attached). Rob Larter’s (latest) response to latter attached.

DECISION on seismics: ask GW to focus on Ross Sea and seek endorsement from SCAR Geoscience SSG as an Action Group (an ideal venue for projects with specific goal), rather than within ACE. ACE will fully support such a proposal. Ross Powell will ensure this goes through the next SCAR Geoscience SSG meeting. ACE is willing to provide venues and even money to support the project. As Action Groups develops, ACE can support growth of the programme.

DECISION on Permafrost: ACE discussed this and thought it was a great idea, with important objectives and excellent membership. The proposed group should liaise with Alan Haywood as the Chair of the relevant Neogene ACE subcommittee. Also, as SCAR Geosciences SSG already has a Permafrost Action Group, this proposal needs to be fed into that Action Group, with full support of ACE and its Neogene Subcommittee. ACE is willing to provide venues and even money to support the project. Next international permafrost meeting is in Fairbanks summer 2008. With support of ACE, this group

(aside Ice cores)

ACTION 6: MJS to check with Tim Naish who should be liaising with Ken Taylor. ACE would like an ice cores person (possibly Taylor) on committee.

(aside Future of ANDRILL)

ANDRILL has official committee to look for future projects. ACE can certainly encourage future ANDRILL development, and help in any way ANDRILL wishes. Ross Powell to ask how ACE can help ANDRILL.

15.15     Outreach (see Passchier email).

We can certainly use the website, as recommended by SP, for the purpose of outreach, as discussed earlier.

ACTION 7. Rob Dunbar to write to SP about this issue.

16.00     *********************** Tea ***********************

16.15     Discussion on links to PAGES activities and discussions with Julie Brigham-Grette (PAGES Chair) on this relative to low lat and Arctic work (email from JBG, 29 Aug 05 attached).

JBG gave a detailed presentation on PAGES (no ppt facilities available, so JBG gave handouts). PAGES started in 1992, by the parent programme IGBP. PAGES “facilitates international collaboration wrt past climate change”. PAGES is only group of IGBP concerned with palaeo work.

50% of funding from NSF, other 50% from Swiss.

Work of PAGES similar to ACE as a facilitator, and has several spin off programmes (such as IMAGES and PANASH, CLIVAR which led PIMP and PIMP2).

For Antarctica, PAGES has ANTIME, ITASE and PICE. It also has a Pole-Equator-Pole mission (PEPS).

PAGES will propose new focus to replace some existing projects (for example, past climate forcings, and variability, land-sea correlations and human dimensions of climate change), led by overarching science questions (related to thresholds and anthropogenic vs natural change).

PAGES also acts to get people to discuss issues across themes, such as chronologies, proxy records, data management.

PAGES supports its initiatives by organising meetings and symposia.

Newsletter (see below) goes to 38,000 people, free, by pdf, paid for by Swiss and NSF, and is downloaded from website over 4000 times when new editions come out.

Website gets thousands of hits per day!

PAGES has money to support workshops (~$5000).

PAGES now wants to strengthen its affiliations.

Could have cross-links with PAGES and ACE. For example, we could have an ACE-page on PAGES website.

16.30     Polar edition of the PAGES Newsletter?

PAGES would like to push for Polar Newsletter. Possibility for 1st issue 2007. Would be both Arctic and Antarctic.

ACE fully encourages stronger links with PAGES.

ACTION 8: RD to send email about links with PAGES and how ACE needs to liaise with this group. We should all sign up to the PAGES newsletter, and encourage involvement in future polar edition of newsletter. ACE should certainly link to PAGES on its website.

ACE should apply for session at next PAGES meeting in 2009.

PAGES may have deeper time themes in future, to answer its scientific overarching questions (see above). This may make connections with ACE even better in future.

16.55    *********************** JBG and Rob Bauer left meeting. Tony Payne joining meeting.***********************

16.55     Status of the IODP Wilkes Land Proposal – Escutia

Provisionally scheduled for Jan 2009.

ACE can provide supporting letter.

17.00     Outcomes from ACE co-funded East Antarctic Workshop in Spoleto – Escutia

Successful workshop. EAIS community had not met since 1995, so excellent exchange of information took place, especially Holocene group. EOS paper to be written up from meeting. ACE funded three students to attend, with some small money left over (TBD what to do with this).

17.05     Resubmission of IODP Ross Sea Proposal – Escutia

Ross Sea proposal is being resurrected, on basis of success of Wilkes project. IODP has been contacted, focussing on plio-pleistocene and Miocene, response was enthusiastic but a full review will be needed on proposal. Revision of existing proposal (from some time back) is therefore needed. Jan 2007 for deadline. Two problems: lack of lead (could/should be Phil Bart) and need for update of proposal.

ACE should support Ross Sea initiative.

ACTION 9. MJS and Rob Dunbar to email Phil Bart encouraging his leadership of Ross Sea IODP proposal , once we get the go-ahead from Fred Davey.

17.22     ISAES-X Workshop on ACE ice-sheet and climate modelling 2-3 days – Powell

Also could have session on ACE time slices (Francis). 1st week Sept 2007.

Several (three or four) workshops and short courses possible (running over 1 day, concurrently, before the meeting) at this meeting, relating to ACE and SALE.

  1. Ice sheet modelling needs a workshop, and should include Alan Haywood.
  2. Records of climate change.
  3. Subglacial lakes and sedimentary environments.

$5000 contribution from ACE to this meeting.

ACTION 10 (carried over from EGU meeting!). Rob Dunbar to coordinate the allocation of $5000 to Santa Barbara meeting.

17.40     China’s involvement in ACE (see Colin Summerhays’ email attached) – Siegert

Colin Summerhayes suggested three names for ACE committee. However, we need to do this cautiously to ensure we get the right people.

ACTION 11: Email Zhanhai Zhang to see what Chinese people might be interested in ACE. ACE to seek out Chinese and Asian names at the Hobart meeting.

17.50     Other potential members for ACE (see Colin Summerhays’ email attached) – Siegert

ACTION 12. ALL. We all need to think about new names for ACE.

18.00     ACE and AGCS group on LGM-Holocene (Dunbar and Siegert to discuss following SCAR meeting in Amsterdam, 21-24 November 2005).

AGCS and ACE getting together to have a 1-day workshop at Hobart on LGM-Holocene in Antarctica. Could develop links with ice core community. Rob Dunbar and Tony Payne to coordinate from ACE side.

AOB
Speakers for SCAR29 (see attached note [link missing], MJS should not do this).
Rob Dunbar has agreed to speak for ACE at SCAR29.

IPICS agreement. SSG must make this decision. We like the idea, but need to clarify the situation with SSG. ACE accepts the benefit of IPICS-ACE links.

ACTION 13. We need to check whether ACE budget will be affected.

Next meeting. Will have meetings at EGU (next) and at Hobart, 2006 (after).

ACTION 14. Email the ACE meeting about how we have spent money, and to encourage applications for small amounts, for student participation at meetings and fieldwork.

18.15     *********************** Meeting closed. ***********************
